Abstract:
The "V-Rod" is Harley-Davidson's newest production motorcycle. Designated platform VRSC, it is also the first Harley-Davidson to utilize a liquid cooled powerplant. We will discuss the development history of the V-Rod from inception to production. A review of the Electromagnetic Compliance Test Lab, located at the Product Development Center (PDC) which opened in 1988 and is located within Harley's new 210,000 square foot R&D facility in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, can also be provided.

Mark DeBattista, the Sr. EMC Technical Specialist within the PDC's EMC Lab, has history including 12 years with Louis Allis Drives Division in the design and testing of military 440VAC, 240KW, 3-phase power sources for Navy surface ships, and 3 years with Rockwell, Allen-Bradley Division, on electric motor drive systems. During the last 8 years the Harley-Davidson Motor Company has employed him in the development and certification of new platforms within the motorcycle industry. Mr. DeBattista specialized in automotive style electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) testing with regard to the design and test of vehicles and components. He operates the EMC Lab with a focus on vehicle motorcycle testing according to specifications provided by Harley-Davidson, Delphi Electronics, GM, Ford, SAE and CISPR requirements legislated in Europe. He is a NARTE Certified Specialist (National Association of Radio and Telecommunication Engineers), holding degrees in Industrial Electronics, and Computer Design.
